Warming locals, one scarf at a time

Warming locals, one scarf at a time

By Courtney Molinaro

A professor’s small scarf-making service project with her daughter’s youth group at First Presbyterian Church in Bethlehem is now in its fourth year of giving back.

Debra Field, a music professor, and the youth group chose to help New Bethany Ministries, a group in the South Side of Bethlehem, during the holiday season.

New Bethany is a non-profit organization that provides shelter for the homeless, meals for the needy and a temporary home for families who need to make a new start.

Field said the idea to make scarves stemmed from her skills in knitting. When the project began four years ago, Field shared her skills with her daughter and her youth group.

The next year, Field and the youth group decided to make scarves for an apartment complex that New Bethany took over for underprivileged families. They made 21 scarves for all the residents in the complex.

Last year, Field put a message in the Lehigh announcements announcing her service project.

"I set an arbitrary goal of 100 scarves and I got 101," she said.

This year, Field already has bags full of warm winter scarves sitting in her office waiting to be delivered to the community through New Bethany Ministries.
